임진강의 적벽은 용암이 지표를 흐르면서 식을 때 수직으로 주상절리(柱狀節理: 마그마의 냉각 응 고에 따른 부피의 수축에 의하여 생기는 多角形 기둥 모양의 금)되면서 형성된 것으로, 용암이 분포 하는 지역은 북한의 일부 지역과 철원평야한탄강 유역과 임진강 하류 지역까지 약 96km에 이르고 있다. 철원 부근에서 마지막으로 일어난 화산활동은 신생대 4기인 27만년 이전에 있었던 것으로 밝혀졌다.
